FACTS ABOUT ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION

Did you know......
 | Currently, more that 80,000 people are awaiting lifesaving organ transplants in the
United States. Tens of thousands more need tissue transplants.
|
 | In the state of Oklahoma, approximately 750 people are awaiting organ
transplants.Thirty-five Oklahomans died waiting for a transplant in 2002.
|
 | In the United States, as many as 20 people will die each day without receiving the
lifesaving organ transplant that they need.
|
 | People who died from injuries that result in brain death can donate organs and tissues.
People who have died from cardiac death can donate only tissues.
|
 | Kidneys are one organ that can be donated by living donors. Segments of livers and lungs
can also be transplanted from living donors.
|
 | The potential donor's next-of-kin must give written permission before any donation will
take place.
|
 | These organs can be transplanted: kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine.
|
 | These tissues can be transplanted: heart valves, corneas, bone, skin, and connective
tissue.

 | Organ recovery takes place in an operating room in a sterile environment.

 | Organ and tissue donation does not affect funeral arrangements.

 | There is no cost to the family for organ and tissue donation, and the family is not
compensated for their donation.

 | All major religions support organ and tissue donation.

 | Signing a donor card or marking your driver's license does not mean donation will
automatically take place. Since the closest relative must give permission for the
donation, it is essential that the family be told of a person's decision to become a
donor. |
 | Researchers Have found that a group of cholesterol-lowering drugs know as
"statins," appear to suppress certain immune system cells and may be useful for
treating transplant patients. |
